شیشه‌ای بزرگ برای دیدن آسمان

۷۹ سال پیش در چنین روزی، در سال ۱۹۴۷، تراش و صیقل قطعهٔ شیشه‌ای ۲۰۰ اینچی تلسکوپ رصدخانهٔ پالومار (Palomar) پس از ۱۱ سال به پایان رسید. ساخت آن با ریختن ۲۰ تن شیشهٔ مذاب در قالب آغاز شده بود؛ شیشه را چنان آهسته سرد کردند که کاهش دمایش در هر روز فقط یک یا دو درجه بود. آماده‌کردن چنین قطعهٔ بزرگی برای تلسکوپ، کاری طولانی و دقیق بود. تلسکوپ کامل را به یاد جرج ای. هیل (George E. Hale)، آغازگر طرح، نام‌گذاری کردند و نخستین بار در سال ۱۹۴۹ با آن از بخشی از راه شیری عکس گرفتند.

ردّ گرمایش در اندازه‌گیری‌ها

۶۲ سال پیش در چنین روزی، در سال ۱۹۶۴، گای اس. کالندر (Guy S. Callendar)، مهندس و هواشناس انگلیسی، درگذشت؛ کسی که دهه‌ها اندازه‌گیری دما را از سراسر جهان کنار هم گذاشته بود. او در مقاله‌ای در سال ۱۹۳۸ نشان داد که روند گرمایش با افزایش پیوستهٔ دی‌اکسید کربنِ حاصل از فعالیت انسان هم‌زمان است. دانشمندان پیش از او اثر گلخانه‌ای این گاز را شناخته بودند، اما کالندر پیوند آن را با مصرف سوخت در صنعت و خانه‌ها با داده‌های گسترده‌تری بررسی کرد. کارش به پژوهش‌های پیشین دربارهٔ اثر دی‌اکسید کربن بر دمای زمین اهمیت تازه‌ای داد.
