ستاره‌ای که فاصلهٔ آندرومدا را آشکار کرد

۱۰۳ سال پیش در چنین روزی، در سال ۱۹۲۳، ادوین هابل (Edwin Hubble) از بخشی از سحابی آندرومدا عکس گرفت. چند روز بعد، در عکس ستارهٔ کم‌نوری دید که روشنایی‌اش تغییر می‌کرد؛ علامت «نواختر» را که پیش‌تر کنار آن گذاشته بود خط زد و نوشت: «متغیر!» بررسی‌های بعدی نشان داد این نخستین ستارهٔ متغیر قیفاووسیِ یافته‌شده در آندرومداست. آهنگ تغییر روشنایی چنین ستاره‌ای به هابل راهی داد تا درخشندگی واقعی آن را با روشنایی دیده‌شده‌اش مقایسه کند و فاصلهٔ آندرومدا را بسنجد. نتیجه شگفت‌انگیز بود: آندرومدا بسیار فراتر از راه شیری قرار داشت.

بوقی که آغاز عصر فضا شد

۶۹ سال پیش در چنین روزی، در سال ۱۹۵۷، اتحاد شوروی اسپوتنیک-۱ (Sputnik 1) را از قزاقستان به مدار زمین فرستاد؛ نخستین ماهوارهٔ ساختهٔ بشر که آغاز عصر فضا شد. این ماهواره تقریباً هر ۹۵ دقیقه یک بار دور زمین می‌گشت و سیگنال رادیویی‌اش در سراسر جهان دریافت می‌شد. همان صدا بعدها سرنخی برای ایده‌ای دیگر هم شد: دو دانشمند با بررسی تغییر فرکانس سیگنال اسپوتنیک دریافتند می‌توان مدارش را تعیین کرد. آن‌ها به این فکر افتادند که اگر جای ماهواره معلوم باشد، از تغییر فرکانس سیگنال آن می‌توان جای گیرنده‌ای روی زمین را پیدا کرد؛ ایده‌ای برای ناوبری ماهواره‌ای.
